The final of the official Dota 2 International world championship took place yesterday, with Chinese team Newbee winning the $5 million prize pot. Newbee beat another team from China, ViCi Gaming in front of a capacity crowd at Seattle's Key Arena. As a team, Newbee took home $5 million, while runner-up team ViCi Gaming received $1.5 million. The third-place team, North America's Evil Geniuses, earned $1 million total.

GamesBeat reports that Marty O’Donnell, the composer for the hit shooter series Halo, has settled a lawsuit against Bungie chief executive Harold Ryan. A King County Superior Court judge in Seattle has approved a deal in which Ryan will pay O’Donnell more than $95,000 to settle legal claims related to a lawsuit that O’Donnell filed in May.

Glu Mobile's Kim Kardashian iOS game is set generate $200 million annual revenue for the company, according to one analyst. The game has already boosted the company's share price by 40 percent in less than a month, and according to what analyst Doug Creutz told Bloomberg, revenue from Glu's game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood could reach $200 million for the year.

Sales of the PC and Mac versions of Minecraft have surpassed 16 million copies, according to developer Mojang's official site for the game. The impressive number is up from up from the 15 million copies the company revealed in April and the 14 million copies it announced in February.

Minecraft Pocket Edition sales surpassed 21 million units in April, while 12 million copies of Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition had been sold as of February, according to Mojang's internal sales figures.

UK-based Dovetail Games announced that it has signed a global licensing deal with Microsoft to develop and publish all-new games based on Microsoft’s popular flight simulation technology. The company said in a press release today that it is currently investigating new concepts in this area and is expecting to bring a release to market in 2015.

Dovetail Games also announced that it acquired the rights to distribute Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Gold Edition via Steam. The new release on Steam will be sold under the name, Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition.

When fans of EA's upcoming The Sims game -- The Sims 4 -- heard that swimming pools and toddlers would not be in the game at launch (or possibly ever), they were upset. A recent post from EA's Rachel Franklin on The Sims 4 blog hoped to explain why these things were excluded and calm down any backlash from The Sims community. But it seems like Franklin's rather lengthy explanation has done little to nothing to calm down the community.

Mojang has announced that its flagship title Minecraft on consoles has surpassed sales on PC and Mac. According to a tweet from Mojang Data Analyst Patrick Geuder, the console versions of the game (PS3 and Xbox 360) have finally passed Windows and Mac versions.

Mojang did not offer specific breakdowns on sales for the myriad of platforms the game is available on. Geuder also noted that Minecraft across all platforms has surpassed the 54 million units sold mark.

Candy Crush Saga developer King has joined UK video game industry trade group, Ukie. Ukie claims that its membership is over 200 businesses across the interactive entertainment sector. King, who is best known for creating the Candy Crush Saga game and for suing anyone who uses the words "Candy," or "Saga," became a publicly traded company in the United States this year.

Security firm Malwarebytes has uncovered a phishing scheme on Instagram that may have already claimed some victims. The scam takes advantage of the World Cup going on this week, by pretending to be EA support on Twitter and lures people to an Instagram page offering new / exclusive FIFA 14 characters for free as long as you visit the link in the profile.

Stig Asmussen has confirmed with Polygon that he has been working at Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment for "a couple months" on an unannounced project.

Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella told Polygon in a response to him joining the company, that it was "super excited to have him."

Asmussen spent the last 12 years with Sony Computer Entertainment America, working his way up from lead environment artist on God of War to creative director on God of War 3.

The popular and often copied Temple Run games on the Apple App Store have been downloaded one billion times, according to GII. Developed by Imangi Studios, Temple Run and Temple Run 2 are world-running platformer games that are extremely popular and have been cloned by other developers trying to cash in on the games' popularity.

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick revealed yesterday during a Cowen and Company analyst conference (covered by GameSpot) that a new Red Dead Redemption game is on the way and that BioShock is not dead.

The top selling game on Steam from May 18-24 was Wolfenstein: The New Order, knocking DayZ off the top spot of this week's Steam top sellers chart. Supergiant's Transistor also sold well enough to come out on top over Bohemia's Early Access title, grabbing the runner-up spot and relegating DayZ to third.

Pre-orders for Watch Dogs continue to keep the upcoming game near the top of the charts as well, while discount specials on Dark Souls and The Witcher franchises lifted the games back onto the list.

Conan O'Brien's latest edition of "Clueless Gamer" takes on Ubisoft's hacking-themed open-world action game, Watch Dogs. Being that Conan isn't much of a gamer, he acts like he's playing Grand Theft Auto V, with lots of inadvertent car crashes, car jackings, random gunfire, and other acts of stupidity.

At around 7 p.m. EST on May 22, Harmonix's reboot of the classic action rhythm game Amplitude managed to hit its funding goal of $750,000. This is quite an amazing achievement for Harmonix if you consider that the Kickstarter campaign at the beginning of the week was nowhere near close to its funding goal. But somehow in the eleventh hour - and with a lot of support from high profile developers, a Twitch marathon, and general word-of-mouth amongst fans - the game managed to get fully funded.

Mojang's best selling open world building game Minecraft is about to generate more revenue for the company when new versions are released this August. Mojang has confirmed the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of Minecraft will launch in early August.

Harmonix's Kickstarter for the current generation reboot of its cult classic PS2 rhythm-action music game, Amplitude, is within striking distance of getting fully funded. Earlier in the week it looked like the project would not survive the Kickstarter funding process, but in the last several days the project has seen a surge of public support.

Developer inXile has announced in its latest Kickstarter update for Wasteland 2 that the game will officially be released in August. Wasteland 2 was successfully funded on Apr 17, 2012 via a rather impressive Kickstarter campaign that raised over $2.9 million by its close and was backed by 61,290 people. The post apocalyptic action RPG - which was the inspiration of the Fallout series of games from Interplay (now owned by Bethesda) - was also released on Steam Early Access in December of last year.

Flappy Birds will be coming back, and when it does it will be a multiplayer game, according to the CNBC program Closing Bell. Host Kelly Evans confirmed on Twitter that the game will release in August. When it is re-released it will offer a multiplayer component and "less addictive" gameplay. The last point is important to creator Dong Nguyen, who took his game offline because it ruined his simple life and because he felt it was too addictive.

Recently Minecraft maker and Mojang co-founder Markus "Notch" Persson sat down for an extensive interview with Rolling Stone to talk about his success and his future plans. During the course of the Interview Persson said that he has a 10-year plan for his employees if he doesn't come up with an idea for a successor to Minecraft.

Bandai Namco revealed today that its hardcore action RPG sequel Dark Souls 2 has shipped 1.2 million copies to North America and Europe in its three weeks at retail. Developed by From Software, Dark Souls 2 launched in early March. The shipping numbers revealed today are as of March 31, 2014 and do not include the PC release, which launched last month, nor do they include sales in Japan because From Software self-published the game there.

Rovio, who is already operating a third-party publishing label called Rovio Stars, revealed another publishing label called Rovio LVL 11. The new label is apparently for internal games that don't quite fit in with Rovio's overall brand.

Activision has set aside $500 million in total to develop, manufacture and promote the Bungie's Destiny series. That big number was revealed by Activision chief executive Bobby Kotick at the Milken conference in LA, as reported on by Reuters.

The original PC version of Minecraft has gone past the 15 million sales milestone, according to a new announcement by its creator. The news comes from Minecraft creator and Mojang co-founder Markus Persson, who posted the news on Twitter.

Mojang has launched the Minecraft Realms subscription service in North America today. In case you didn't know, Minecraft Realms offers hosting and setup for multiplayer Minecraft worlds starting at around $13 a month.

According to a recent tweet from Microsoft's head of Xbox Phil Spencer, the new Xbox One version of Minecraft will allow you to do something that the Xbox One won't with Xbox 360 - have some measure of backwards compatibility. According to Spencer, Xbox 360 Minecraft owners will have the grand ability to transfer their save data over to the Xbox One version of the game.

Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. and NetEase have inked an agreement to license Blizzard Entertainment's Heroes of the Storm to a NetEase-affiliate in mainland China for a term of three years. Heroes of the Storm is Blizzard's upcoming free-to-play, online team brawler featuring heroes from more than 20 years of Blizzard gaming history. Gamers will be able to play some of their favorite characters from the Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo universes, and team up with friends to battle other teams online.
