Beginning today you can download the game for free and own it even if you let that Xbox Live Gold account expire. You'll have until the end of January to add it to your library.
Xbox One owners still have until the end of January to get D4: Dark Dreams Don't Lie through Games With Gold.
Evolve maker Turtle Rock Studios has responded to sharp criticism about its planned downloadable content after the asymmetric multiplayer shooter releases on February 10 (the beta for the game launched today on Xbox one).
The promised free DLC for Assassin's Creed Unity has been released for the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 versions of the game. The Dead Kings DLC is a peace offering and apology of sorts from Ubisoft in the wake of the game's less than optimal launch and myriad of bugs, glitches, and technical issues that tested the patience of even the most loyal of AC fans. Ubisoft also gave away a free game and refunded money to those who paid for a Season Pass for DLC. The Season Pass was abandoned in the wake of all the problems with the game.
Bethesda Softworks is giving away its classic CRPG Elder Scrolls: Arena for PC away for free. All you have to do is visit the official site for the game at www.elderscrolls.com/arena and find the download link.
Elder Scrolls: Arena is the first game in Bethesda's popular RPG series. Its success would spawn such sequels and spin-offs as Daggerfall, Battlespire, Redguard, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim - and coming soon to PS4 and Xbox One - The Elder Scrolls Online.

Sony has revealed the free games that PlayStation Plus subscribers can score in January. Beginning January 6, PlayStation Plus members can get inFAMOUS: First Light (PS4), The Swapper (PS4/PS3/PS Vita), Prototype 2 (PS3), DuckTales Remastered (PS3), Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition (PS Vita/PS3) and Whoa Dave! (PS Vita/PS4) for free.

Game developer Vlambeer is giving Nuclear Throne owners a special gift at the beginning of the year: another copy of the game to give away to friends or family. Mobile developer Halfbrick Studios is celebrating the holidays by giving the gaming community every game in its iOS catalog for free. All ten of the studio's games are available for free for a limited time including the popular Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride, and its other games Fish Out Of Water!, Monster Dash, Age Of Zombies: Season 2, Band Stars, Colossatron: Massive World, Birzzle Fever, Yes Chef!, and Top Farm.

From now until the end of the year Xbox Live Gold subscribers can download the popular EA Sports extreme snowboarding game SSX for free on Xbox 360 through Microsoft's ongoing Games With Gold freebie game giveaway program. The game normally retails for $19.99 on Microsoft's digital marketplace.
SSX takes the place of the Xbox 360 game The Raven: Legacy of a Master Thief, which was available for free in the first half of December.
A new update to the PS4 launch title, Killzone Shadow Fall, adds a way to earn in-game currency - as opposed to buying it with real-world cash. Prior to the update, the only way to get it was through paid downloadable content. Patch 1.80 adds a new in-game currency called Valor, which can be spent on customization and gameplay boosting DLC.
Players can earn Valor by playing multiplayer matches and have their score converted into the new currency. Players can also receive bonuses by completing challenges listed on the game's Update screen.
Sony is offering a special deal for those who haven't bought a PlayStation 4 yet: a free game to go along with it. Those who purchase the $399.99 PS4 will find a code inside to download one of four games. It is unclear if this is a direct response to Microsoft's Xbox One price cut to $350 (including Xbox One bundles that come with various games) as part of a holiday promotion running until early January.

EA Mobile claims that titles in its mobile games catalog have been collectively downloaded two billion times. That milestone was reached earlier in the week, according to EA.

Evolve developer Turtle Rock Studios plans to give away all downloadable content for free and it says that its premium DLC content will not "directly exclude" players who have purchased the base game.
In an interview with IGN, Turtle Rock's Phil Robb, the creative director for Evolve, said that his company has done this so it does not fracture the community into two groups.
Microsoft celebrates the Xbox One's one year anniversary by giving "early adopters" of the system Limbo for free. The recently released game from Copenhagen, Denmark-based studio Playdead is a dark 2D puzzle-platformer that was originally released on Xbox 30 in July of 2010. It was later released on PC, PS3, Mac, and PS Vita. The game is also available to everyone else too but if you are not an early adopter you'll have to put some money down to get it.
Bohemia Interactive liked a fan-made 2D demake of Day Z so much that it is now hosting it on their official web site. The free fan-made DayZ tribute called MiniDayZ "demakes" Bohemia's popular survival sandbox as a top-down 2D experience with retro-style graphics and single-player gameplay (the game doesn't feature multiplayer like Day Z).
MiniDayZ was created by a Russian DayZ fan who goes by the online name of CannedBits. He (or she) has been developing the project since the spring and managed to get the attention of DayZ creator Dean "Rocket" Hall.
GOG.com has officially kicked off its annual Autumn Sale, offering steep discounts as high as 85 percent off its catalog of DRM-free PC games. Along with those discounts, you can get The Witcher 2 for free - but you'll have to jump through a few hoops first.
In order to get the free game you have to collect stamps each day by visiting the site. There are seven stamps that you have to collect and a new one will appear every day. Those who are ultra cheap and do not already own the CD Projekt RED title won't have to purchase anything in order to get the game for free.
EA is offering players a free week-long trial of Battlefield 4 on Origin as part of its ongoing Game Time promotion. The game, which had a very rocky launch and caused a lot of bad blood between players and EA, will have everything unlocked - including the full single-player campaign - during this free preview.
Any progress made during the free preview can be carried over to the full game if you decide to buy it.
Ubisoft announced today that its online focused racing game The Crew will receive free DLC in addition to a season pass. For $24.99 players will get two exclusive cars at launch next month, and one week's worth of "early access" to four car packs. Those cars will also be sold individually for $6.99 each.
As new content packs are released, Ubisoft says that they will be accompanied by new missions that match the DLC's theme, which will be available to all players free of charge.
CD Projekt RED announced that the next game in its popular action RPG series, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, will get 16 free DLC packs after it is released. The DLC packs will be free to anyone who buys the game as they are released and will be made available on all platforms the game is on. A brand new The Sims 4 update will finally add what people have been clamoring for: swimming pools. Yes, people have been clamoring for swimming pools. Why? Because they were not included in the original game. The patch, which will automatically download when you launch your Origin account, is the second of three monthly updates promised by Maxis. The first one launched in October and added ghosts and 4 Star Wars themed costumes.
The next big update in December will open up new career paths and associated rewards.
This month's Games With Gold freebies for Xbox Live Gold subscribers will look very familiar. This month anyone with an Xbox Live gold membership will be able to download Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise (normally $14.99) beginning Nov.1 for Xbox 360. On the 16th they'll get a new game - Red Faction: Guerrilla (normally $19.99). Those with an Xbox One can download Volgarr the Viking. Volgarr the Viking is an ID@Xbox game and will debut on Xbox One as a free download.
