Seven Zombies Awarded $165,000

August 23, 2010 -

"Brains! Brains!" That is what seven plaintiffs must have screamed as police arrested them for dressing up as zombies in a sassy protest against mindless consumerism in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Star Tribune reports that the Minneapolis city attorney's office has decided to pay seven zombies and their attorney $165,000. The settlement, which was approved by the Minneapolis City Council on Friday, is the end result of a federal lawsuit the seven filed after they were arrested and jailed for two days simply for dressing up like zombies and shambling along the streets of downtown Minneapolis on July 22, 2006, to protest "mindless" consumerism.

From Game Developer Dreams to a Topless Reality

August 9, 2010 -

Carrianne Howard had a dream: to design videogames for a living. That dream went awry when she realized that a degree she spent almost $70,000 on wasn't worth the paper it was printed on. Now she's a stripper in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It sounds like the punch line to a joke, but Howard isn't laughing.

Howard dreamed of developing video games, so she enrolled in a program at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, a for-profit college partially owned by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. But after spending $70,000 on the degree she came to the conclusion that it was worthless. When she went to find a job with her diploma proudly in hand, she figured out that it meant nothing and that it wasn't recognized by most employers in the sector. Howard settled for a $12 an hour job recruiting employees for video game companies. She lost that job, which wasn’t even close to what she was looking for, a year later when her department was shut down.

These days the 26-year-old woman makes her living by stripping at a topless club.

RIAA: Great Moments in Spending

July 19, 2010 -

Last week The Recording Industry vs. The People blog uncovered financial documents that showed the RIAA - the trade group that represents the music industry - spent around $16 million in legal fees on a handful of cases in 2008 to recover $391,000 USD from P2P lawsuits. Ouch.

This week the Denver Westword blog highlights the industry's proclivity for wasting cash with ten tongue-in-cheek (mostly) examples. Among their examples are Sony-BMG's DRM on the Neil Diamond album "12 Songs," and Jive Records' $1.5 million investment in hip-hop artist Papoose who was supposed to give them enough tracks for an album (it never happened).

Good Griefing, Charlie Brown!

June 30, 2010 -

In anticipation of next week's release of Crackdown 2, MTV Multiplayer has slapped together "Crackdown 2 Guide to Griefing: How to Make Your Xbox Live Friends Hate You." Of course, you could just continually ask them to join a party while they are trying to watch something important on Netflix like an Akira Kurosawa movie (you know who you are) to accomplish that goal.

The guide features five irritating (from your friends' perspective anyway) activities you can engage in to make people hate you with colorful names like The Alabama Roof Push, The Kalamazoo Car Toss, The Dangling Gift Horse, The Live Orb Snatch 'N Grab, and the The Hangman's Grift. Here's one example:

Xbox Live Indie Game Pokes Fun at BP Oil Spill

June 30, 2010 -

While it might some like poor taste to even consider making a joke about the continuing British Petroleum oil spill in the gulf (which is in its 70th day as of today), and Xbox Live Indie game developer has decided to go ahead and make a video game about it called "Crisis in the Gulf."

To be fair, the game doesn't go out of its way to make light of the situation, but rather the people allegedly handling the spill. The game, available for $1 on Xbox Live, was developed by Super Boise and goes out of its way to skewer both BP and Sarah Palin. Kotaku, who took some video of this tower defense game in action, calls it "not very much fun."

I can't say that we're shocked that an Xbox Live Indie Game might suck. If you hate Sarah Palin and BP it's probably worth a look. You can download the demo for free and try it yourselves before you part with that $1..

The Pirate Bay Presents Pirate Date

June 11, 2010 -

The Pirate Bay, at one time the world's number one destination for pirated software, music and movies, has launched a dating site. Yes, you've read that correctly: a DATING SITE. The new site from Pirate Bay creators is called "Pirate Date," and is free of charge.

According to Pirate Date founders, the site was created to "share their single friends in the same way they share files." The site will use a system of "social trust" that allows members to vouch for each other and verify that friends are real and available. Here's some more on transparency - assuming that you are still reading about this crazy idea:

Farmville Playing Bulgarian Pol Put Out to Pasture

March 31, 2010 -

Playing Farmville on your own time, some might say, is bad enough, but playing it on the job, especially if you are a politician, is a definite no-no.

Councilor Dimitar Kerin, a member of the City Council for the region of Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second-largest city, was dismissed from his position after repeated warnings about playing the Facebook application during meetings. Several councilors were first caught playing Farmville early in March, during debates for the city’s 2010 budget, reports Novinite.com.

Fellow committee member Todor Hristov suggested that Kerin be removed from his seat as he “needs more time for his virtual farm.” A vote to remove Kerin was taken up, and passed by a slim 20-19 vote. Kerin then complained that he was not the only council member playing Farmville and noted that he was only a Level 40 farmer, while a fellow councilman had reached Level 46.

Rickets Link to Gaming Debunked

January 25, 2010 -

Frankly we had purposely avoided “gaming causes rickets” stories up until now because any link to videogames in the research was tenuous at best, but when pro-gaming MP Tom Watson calls foul over the link and assists in ridiculing the tabloid-type headlines screaming about the latest threat to humanity at the hand of games, it’s worth a look.

Events began with a press release issued to call attention to a new study from a pair of doctors which reported on a growing Vitamin D deficiency among the UK population.  A lack of Vitamin D can lead to rickets, a condition that can cause growth problems and bowed-legs in children.

In the press release it was noted that “A traditional UK diet often lacks Vitamin D and this could be a big reason for the increasing problem, as well as changes in lifestyle, such as children staying indoors playing computer games.”

A free paper in the UK (the Metro) picked up the story, splashing a “Video Gaming Leads to Surge in Rickets” headline across its pages, leading GamesBrief columnist Nicholas Lovell to pick apart the Metro story bit-by-bit.

Lovell wrote:

This survey makes no causal link between games and rickets, or even Vitamin D deficiency. It has identified a significant public health issue of rising numbers of cases of rickets, an entirely preventable disease that was almost eradicated fifty years ago. The potential causes are many, ranging from a changing population ethnicity, the lack of playing fields for schoolchildren, a culture of fear that prevents children playing outside unsupervised or even feckless parents who no longer feed their offspring a teaspoonful of foul-tasting cod liver oil every day.

Both Lovell and Watson emailed the study’s authors, Professor Simon Pearce and Dr. Timothy Cheetham.  Amusingly, Pearce emailed Lovell, “The average age of a child with rickets is around 20 months old: too young to use a keyboard and mouse!”

Pearce also replied to MP Watson, writing, “No we really didn’t do a study to show that, or say that Gaming causes rickets. It was a classic piece of dodgy lazy journalism, taking 3 words out of PA’s hyped-up version of our press release.”

As Watson summed up:

So, once again video games get a kicking in the press based on an untruth. And the poor health academics who are trying to get their important research across to policy makers have their work undermined by nonsensical headlines.

Watson, for his part, was determined to help the researchers get their message across, promising to request that the government take a look at the case for adding vitamin D supplements to food and for better ways to encourage parents to make sure their children get more exercise.

Watson also indicated that he would ask Department Health Ministers what type of work, if any, they are doing currently to address this issue.

Thanks to everyone who sent this one in.

Sacre Bleu: French Prez a Pirate

October 9, 2009 -

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, a backer of tough new piracy laws in that country, comes off as a bit of a hypocrite after being accused of a pair of copyright infringements.

Sarkozy’s “Hadopi” law was passed just last month and features a three-strike policy for illegal down loaders. Unfortunately it would appear that Sarkozy is already down to his last strike, as he has been accused of two misuses—making 400 unauthorized copies of a DVD and copyright infringement related to his use of an MGMT song at a political rally.

The MGMT song misuse cost Sarkozy 30,000 Euros (approximately $44,112 U.S.). More galling may be the fact that the publisher of the DVD allegedly copied by Sarkozy only created 50 copies itself.

EA to Host Panel on Homophobia in Gaming

July 15, 2009 -

Anyone who games online knows that negative comments about gay people are all too common. Compounding the problem, even game companies who treat their GLBT employees well seem to be wrestling with the notion of how deal with the open expression of sexual orientation in games.

The good news is that the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) plans to hold a panel discussion in homophobia in videogame culture on Saturday. EA will host the event, which is open to the public, at its Redwood HQ. Other noteworthy organizations which will participate are Microsoft, Second Life publisher Linden Labs, GayGamer.net and the ESA.

Shacknews reports on the agenda:

Topics will include "how to provide safe spaces for LGBT people online, how to ensure the best policies are in place to prevent virtual attacks against LGBT people and how to educate the users of online communities about the effects of homophobia.

The GLAAD website reports that the panel will be composed of:

  • Flynn DeMarco (Alias: Fruite Brute), Founder of GayGamer.net
  • Dan Hewitt, Senior Director of Communications & Industry Affairs for the ESA
  • Caryl Shaw, Senior Producer in the Maxis Studio
  • Cyn Skyberg, VP of Customer Relations at Linden Lab
  • Stephen Toulouse (Gamertag: stepto), Program Manager for Policy and Enforcement on Microsoft's XBox LIVE
  • Moderator: Justin Cole, Director of Digital & Online Media, GLAAD

Boston Police Promise to Report Zombie Attacks

May 21, 2009 -

If you've been up all night playing Resident Evil 5 and you're a little freaked out by the experience and you happen to live in Boston, fear not; the local constabulary has your back. The Boston Police Department has vowed to alert the public to any and all zombie attacks.

That reassuring news comes by way TruTV's Dumb as a Blog, which chronicles an exchange of tweets between @Boston_Police and another Twitter user. Here's how it went down:

Boston_Police:  INJURED OFFICER: Officer from district 4 transported to Beth Israel Hospital, human bite to arm, suspect in custody.

willcady:  @Boston_Police if that was a zombie bite, would you tell us?

Boston_Police:   @willcady Yes, absolutely

Michael ChandraIf GP goes "EZK, do not talk about X publicly for a week, we're preparing a big article on it" and he still tweets about X, they'd have a legitimate reason to be pissed.10/20/2014 - 8:52am
Michael ChandraIf GP tells Andrew "we'd kinda prefer it if you stopped talking about Wii-U for 1 week" and he'd tweet about it anyway, firing him for it would be idiotic.10/20/2014 - 8:51am
Michael ChandraLegal right, sure. But that doesn't make it any less pathetic of an excuse.10/20/2014 - 8:50am

Michael ChandraIf your employee respectfully disagrees with your advice, that's not a fireable offense. If they ignore your order, THEN you have the right to be pissed.10/20/2014 - 6:49am
Michael ChandraI... Don't get one thing. If you do not want your employee to do X, why do you tell them it's advice or a wish? Give them a damn order.10/20/2014 - 6:48am

MechaTama31I mean, of the groups being bullied here, which of the two would you refer to collectively as "nerds"?10/19/2014 - 11:30pm
MechaTama31But that's the thing, it doesn't sound to me like he is advocating bullying, it sounds like he is accusing the SJWs of bullying the "nerds", who I can only assume refers to the GGers.10/19/2014 - 11:21pm
