Off-Topic With Double Fine’s Tim Schafer

March 16, 2012 -

Before this month Tim Schafer was famous for making a long line of beloved, humor-driven video games. Now he's also the guy who raised over $3 million to make an old-school adventure game.

In the midst of that historic fundraising drive Gus Mastrapa called Tim Schafer and spoke to him about none of those things. Please enjoy this off-topic conversation about cartoons, A Clockwork Orange and the Iron Maiden poster that Schafer's parents couldn't stand.

February 27, 2015 - GamePolitics Staff

In the latest video in The Fine Bros.' series, Elders React, senior citizens play the game Five Nights at Freddy's and don't respond the way everyone else does.

If you have watched other people play the game you can hear them screaming and watch them jumping as the game surprises them at every turn. These senior citizens? Not so much.

Tomo News Makes Fun of Brian Williams

February 9, 2015 - GamePolitics Staff

Tomo News has an amusing take on Brian Williams' series of half-truths and tall tales about coming under RPG rocket and gunfire in a helicopter while covering the conflict in Iraq and some other stories he may have tweaked the truth on during his career. Yes it's full of wacky imagery as you would expect from a Tomo News report, and is kind of harsh towards Williams, but it's hard to deny that it is funny. Check out the video to your left.

Andrew Eisen Video: The *Truth* About Mario Kart 8 Sales?

January 23, 2015 - GamePolitics Staff

Andrew Eisen's latest video illustrates two things: people do not pay attention to the fine print (if they even bother to get to the end of a story where that fine print might be found) and Andrew is in dire need of hair care products - most notably a comb.

In his video Andrew talks about Nintendo's sales number for Mario Kart 8 and how some people accused Nintendo of lying about them in its fiscal year reporting.

You can check out Andrew's latest video to your left. In case you didn't make it to the end of this story, the title is the joke...

Elderly People Playing 'Grand Theft Auto V'

January 22, 2015 - GamePolitics Staff

In a new video called "Elders Play Grand Theft Auto V," a handful of "veterans of life" play Grand Theft Auto V for the first time with comical results. The tone in the video goes from awkward as the oldsters learn how to play the game, to joy - and in at least one case - disgust.

While the video is meant to be fun and playful, it's pretty clear that many of the participants had preconceived notions about the game before playing it - mostly from watching cable news.

Why Andrew Eisen Doesn't Do Reaction Videos

December 15, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

Our very own Andrew Eisen shows us all why he doesn't do "reaction videos" - you know those videos where people get excited, scared or overwhelmed by something they have watched like a video game, a scary movie, etc.

We will warn you that there is at least one graphic scene in the video that made us squirm a little when we saw it (you'll know it when you see it).

PewDiePie Makes Cameo In This Week's Episode of 'South Park'

December 2, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

This week's episode of South Park will feature the most popular YouTube Let's Play personality on the planet: PewDiePie. In a very short announcement video (to your left) PewDiePie makes the announcement with as much enthusiasm and excitement as you'd expect him to, given his over the top personality.

While it wasn't emphatically stated by PewDiePie, we assume that this week's episode will lampoon either Let's Play video makers or internet culture in general. It will be interesting to see.

'We Are Not Jack Thompson' Song Delivers A Positive Message To All Gamers

November 13, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

YouTube personality and (dare I say it?) musical genius Jonathan Mann has done what a lot of us in the media have not accurately conveyed about feminists critique of video games: that it's okay to criticize the current state of gaming - it doesn't mean that those voices want to censor them. In his new song, "We Are Not Jack Thompson," Mann explains it step-by-step better than anyone else has since GamerGate started nearly three months ago.

'Super Oppressed PPL' Game Makes Fun of Political Correctness

November 6, 2014 - James Fudge

A game created by Evan Harasem called "Super Oppressed PPL" on Newgrounds delivers the narrative of the GamerGate movement on social media, by taking on the voice of "social justice warriors" in the name of forced "inclusion." In the game you select characters based on race and gender, all while the game scolds you for not making the right choices (a "narrative" the creator claims represents the "social justice warriors" of the world.)

South Park Lampoons 'Freemium Games'

November 6, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

In the latest episode of South Park the gang get addicted to a Terrence and Philip "freemium" mobile game. The episode, "Freemium Isn't Free" aims some pretty harsh humor at the business model, with an executive in the episode explaining to the Canadian superstars that free-to-play games monetize every step of the equation and minimize the fun; the point being that players have to pay money to "make the game fun."

'Creepy Murderer on GTA V' Video is Pretty Creepy

October 30, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

This is mildly funny in a creepy sort of way, but it works very well for Halloween. YouTuber MrKreepyKoala decided to dress up like a serial killer and silently hunt and kill Grand Theft auto Online players. Here's the description of a short video he created called "Creepy Murderer on GTA V!"

"In this video I went into lobbies on GTA around 3 AM and started playing creepy lullaby's sung by women and children. I then went into passive mode with my radar turned off so they thought I was invincible and unaware of me being in passive mode!"

Conan Pokes Fun at Microsoft's Purchase of 'Minecraft'

September 16, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

On Monday night's episode of Conan on TBS, Conan O'Brien talked about Microsoft acquiring Mojang and Minecraft for $2.5 billion. And while he didn't mention Markus "Notch" Persson (who made an estimated $1.75 billion off the deal before taxes and other considerations) by name, he introduced the one minute animated clip as "checking in with the creator of Minecraft" to see what he is up to now that the deal has been announced.

We won't spoil it for you, but it is kind of cute and funny.

John Oliver Explains Net Neutrality

June 2, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

While the clip is only 42 seconds long, John Oliver's Last Week Tonight show on HBO explains net neutrality better than anyone has at the FCC. The clip is a response to news that the FCC has approved a draft change to net neutrality that would allow ISPs to charge content providers for faster and better access to their customers.

Along with the FCC proposal, the agency also put the bill out for public comment about finding a way to classify broadband under Title II of the Telecommunications act - or through some other means within the confines of current regulations.

Video: 'Hitman' in Real Life

May 12, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

A recent video from Youtubers Public Prank Compilation shows what it might be like to be Agent 47 - the protagonist from the Hitman series from IO Interactive and Eidos - in real life. The video shows the videogame's most prolific assassin for hire choking out targets, climbing into dumpsters, dragging bodies and more - all within plain view of an unsuspecting public. Some of the reactions are hilarious, but how would you react if you saw a man throw a limp body into a dumpster nonchalantly and then walk away?

MonteThough from a business side, i would agree with the article. While it would be smarter for developers to slow down, you can't expect EA, Activision or ubisoft to do something like that. Nintnedo's gotta get the third party back.02/28/2015 - 4:36pm
MonteThough it does also help that nintendo's more colorful style is a lot less reliant on graphics than more realistic games. Wind Waker is over 10 years old and still looks good for its age.02/28/2015 - 4:33pm
MonteWith the Wii, nintnedo had the right idea. Hold back on shiny graphics and focus on the gameplay experience. Unfortunatly everyone else keeps pushing for newer graphics and it matters less and less each generation. I can barely notice the difference02/28/2015 - 4:29pm
MonteON third party developers; i kinda think they should slow down to nintendo's pace. They bemoan the rising costs of AAA gaming, but then constantly push for the best graphics which is makes up a lot of those costs. Be easier to afford if they held back02/28/2015 - 4:27pm
