Infinite Space III: Sea of Stars Available Via Steam Early Access

Indie developer Digital Eel let us know that its crowd-funded 3D space exploration game, Infinite Space III: Sea of Stars is now available via Steam Early Access.

"Even as development continues, we're very excited to be able to share Sea of Stars early with Kickstarter backers and the gaming community at large," the company said today. "Steam's Early Access allows you to play work-in-progress versions of the game (new build updates are automatic), provide critical feedback and actually help shape its creation."

Chucklefish to Publish 'Heart Forth, Alicia'

Starbound developer Chucklefish announced that it will publish the Metroidvania-style role-playing game Heart Forth, Alicia. Chucklefish will enable developer Alonso Martin to bring the game to platforms beyond Windows PC. The game has been in development for seven years and is currently seeking $60,000 in a Kickstarter campaign. As of this writing the game has already collected $59,368 of its $60,000 goal. By the time you read this, the game will likely hit its initial funding goal.

'UFHO2' Developer Releases Game to Pirate Bay After Over Two Years of Waiting for Steam Greenlight Approval

Ciro Continisio, the developer behind the successfully crowd-funded turn-based strategy title UFHO2, released his game as a torrent on Pirate Bay after the game failed to get approved via Steam's Greenlight program. The game was successfully funded by a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign in early 2012, and in August of that same year Continisio submitted it to the Greenlight program.

Microsoft Rewards Five-Year-Old Who Broke Into Father's Xbox One

San Diego's KGTV has a cool profile of Kristoffer Von Hassel, a five-year-old who discovered a security hole in the Xbox One account login. Kristoffer accidently managed to log in to his father's Xbox One account without knowing the password, according to the news station. He did this simply by entering spaces into the password prompt after failing to punch the right password in the first time.

Fine Young Capitalists Launch Women in Games Initiative

The Fine Young Capitalists is looking for a few good women (or anyone who self identifies as a woman) to take part in its special Women In Video Games Initiative. To take part, would-be applicants are asked to submit a pitch document about a game idea that is right around 1,500 words in length.

The submissions will be judged by the community, with the top five best pitches getting some very professional treatment.

Crytek Offers $10 CryEngine Subscription for Indie Developers

Hot on the heels of Epic Games announcing that it would offer a monthly subscription plan to allow anyone to license its Unreal Engine 4 technology, Crytek is offering a similar deal for its CryEngine technology - for about $9 less. Crytek announced this week during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco that it would offer the CryEngine for $9.90 a month per user.

Half a Million Copies of 'Papers, Please' Sold To-Date

According to CVG, indie darling Papers, Please has sold half a million units to-date. The game recently won a BAFTA for Best Strategy and Simulation Game. In a recent BBC profile, Lucas Pope, the game's creator said that the game had sold 500,000 units. Some of those sales can be attributed to recent Steam sales, but the game has gotten plenty of positive press for its unique gameplay and it subject matter.

As a tease for what it will be showcasing later this month at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Epic Games and Firefox browser maker Mozilla have released a demo reel video showcasing Unreal Engine 4 game content playing at top speed within Firefox.

Epic and Mozilla claim that this video showcases Unreal Engine 4 games playing within Firefox without the need of any additional plug-ins. The video shows off the Epic Soul tech demo, which will likely get a bit more attention when GDC gets underway.

Both channels allow viewers to input movement commands to keep Pacman away from Binky, while the other one inputs commands in the chat window to chase Pacman down and gobble him up...

Freddie Wong’s Video Game High School Sets Crowdfunding Record

Freddie Wong’s company RocketJump has successfully completed a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo with more than $900,907 raised during a month-long campaign to finish "Video game High School," a popular sci-fi series about competitive gamers who attend a high school all about video games. Wong was seeking $750,000, but the project proved to be so popular that it set a record for a crowd funded web series on Indiegogo.

Streaming video service Twitch says that the text-game being played out in its chat system, "Twitch Plays Pokémon," has broken the chat system a bit. Pizza Hut Makes $1 Million in Four Months with Xbox 360 App

3DS Users Create Region Locking Work Around

The 3DS is the first Nintendo handheld to pose region restrictions on all of its games from other regions. This keeps those who want to play games from Japan, for example, from doing so unless you own a 3DS device from Japan.

A group of 3DS owners think this is wrong and have found a way to get around the handheld's region-locking. The method is not a hack that will let you do anything (like play roms downloaded off the Internet, for example) but play games from other regions.
