The makers of the open-sourced emulation software program, RetroArch are the latest to say that video games accessories company Hyperkin is using its program in violation of the GPL license. RetroArch uses a development interface called "libretro" that allows for the "easy creation of emulators and games that can plug straight into this program called RetroArch." It supports 15 different hardware platforms including Android.

An appellate case in court this week brought by former NFL players over the use of their likenesses in video games created by Electronic Arts could make its way to the U.S. Supreme Court, according to William Ford, a professor who teaches intellectual property law at The John Marshall Law School in Chicago.

Candy Crush Saga maker King has settled two of its most prominent trademark disputes - one with The Banner Saga developer Stoic Studio and the other with CandySwipe developer Albert Ransom. Both developers acknowledged on their respective web sites that they have worked out their problems with King.

Stoic was in a dispute with King over using the term "Saga" in the title of its game, while Candy Swipe developer Albert Ransom was disputing King's trademark claims because his game's release predated the release of Candy Crush Saga.

CCP Games tells CVG that it is reviewing the World of Darkness IP after it announced yesterday that it had canceled the MMO based on it and laid off a large number of employees at its Atlanta studio who had been working on the game for over seven years.

White Wolf and CCP Games merged in 2006, prior to CCP beginning work on the MMO.

While Handsome Woman Productions would not "name names," it is hinting that Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has forced the indie development studio to change the name of its "gay-themed" fighting game, "Ultimate Gay Fighter." The studio said that it would change the name of the game featuring LGBT characters due to what it called "legal pressure from an unnamed mixed martial arts promotional company."

In its ongoing lawsuit over the rights to Duke Nukem, 3D Realms has responded to Gearbox Software's trademark violation lawsuit by claiming that it still owns the license to the franchise. The studio is currently preparing to release Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction, a top-down action game starring the familiar gaming hero.

Last month Gearbox announced it would sue 3D Realms and Mass Destruction developer Interceptor Entertainment for allegedly using the IP it claims it owns without permission.

UK-based 'Cut the Rope' developer ZeptoLab has filed an official challenge to King's "Candy" trademark in Europe. The company filed its official challenge to the broad trademark on March 20. In the European Union, King still has an active trademark registration for Candy that covers video games, video game services, and clothing. ZeptoLab is strongly objecting to this in that region, noting that no company should holds the rights to such a broad and commonly used term such as "Candy."

The U.S. government does not have to disclose the evidence it will use against Megaupload owner Kim Dotcom prior to extraditing him to the United States, the New Zealand Supreme Court has ruled. In a 123-page ruling on Thursday the highest court in New Zealand said that there is no precedent to force the U.S. government to show its evidence prior to extradition.

Hot on the heels of Epic Games announcing that it would offer a monthly subscription plan to allow anyone to license its Unreal Engine 4 technology, Crytek is offering a similar deal for its CryEngine technology - for about $9 less. Crytek announced this week during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco that it would offer the CryEngine for $9.90 a month per user.

According to what Mojang co-founder and Minecraft creator Markus 'Notch' Persson said on Twitter last night, a film based on his cult hit open world building game is in the works. What that film might be about is unknown, but Persson claims that the film rights are with Warner Bros. After only a day of being live, a Kickstarter campaign for a Mega Man Board game has managed to get fully funded. The board game, which secured an official license from Capcom, has raised $167,796 from 1,369 backers - well over its initial goal of $70,000. The campaign has 37 more days left, so expect a lot of stretch goals to be added.

According to a brief report on Boston.com from the Associated Press, the auction to sell off what remains of the 38 Studios intellectual property assets will happen today via a telephone auction.

The company handling the auction, Heritage Global Partners, has declined to estimate the IP’s worth, and 38 Studios receiver Richard Land says initial bids that were due last week are being kept confidential.

Double Fine has managed to reacquire the publishing and distribution rights to Stacking and Costume Quest from Nordic Games. Nordic Games purchased the rights to these games during THQ's bankruptcy auction earlier this year. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"I am pleased that we have regained full control over Costume Quest and Stacking, following a daring and top-secret midnight raid on the Nordic Games headquarters in Vienna," Double Fine CEO Tim Schafer said in a statement.

According to CVG Sony is acquiring the rights to Crash Bandicoot from Activision. Crash Bandicoot became the official mascot of the first Sony PlayStation console and was a popular franchise for many years until it was sold as part of a deal with Vivendi.

A bidding war has broken out for assets related to bankrupt developer TimeGate Studios, according to this Wall Street Journal report. According to WSJ rights to the first-person shooter Section 8 as well as TimeGate's unreleased free-to-play title Minimum are at the center of a feud between three separate companies including CNH Partners, France-based Atari SA and Southpeak Interactive Corp.

Heritage Global Partners will hold an auction to sell off the intellectual property of 38 Studios and Big Huge Games. The auction is being held on behalf of Richard J. Land, the Rhode Island court-appointed receiver, on December 11. The deadline for submitting initial bids is 5 pm EST on December 4.

A leak of the most controversial section of the Trans-Pacific Partnership treaty is making waves today. Lawyers for rap artist Daz Dillinger, also known as "Dat Nigga Daz" and "Delmar Drew Arnaud," sent a cease and desist letter to Take-Two Interactive Software and Rockstar Games to block the use of his songs in Grand Theft Auto V. Speaking to TMZ, Dillinger said that he took action because it is all about "respecting an artist's work" and added that "Rockstar didn't do that here and I can't let them get away with it."
