A new update on the community page for Valve's in-house Steam Machines reveals that the Linux-based box designed to play PC games via Valve's operating system (Steam OS) has been pushed back to 2015.

Valve designer Eric Hope posted a message informing fans of the news about the delay and offering early details on a new controller.

Coming off the heels of discontinuing its plans for regional pricing (and apologizing for it to the community) GOG.com has announced that it will make a strong push towards supporting the Linux operations system.

The Linux Foundation has announced that it will work with non-profit online learning site edX to provide an "Introduction to Linux" course free and open to all this summer. edX is governed by Harvard and MIT. This introductory class normally costs $2,400 and will be the first from the Linux Foundation to run as a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). There will also be no limit to enrollment. The course requires no prerequisites and will take between 40 - 60 hours to complete.

Valve's Steam Controller has been getting a mixed response from journalists who finally got to try out the hardware at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. Valve recognizes that the controller still needs a lot of work and tweaking, but ultimately the goal is to make it work with all kinds of games - even games that one would think "require" the use of a mouse and keyboard.

Twelve more companies have lined up to build Steam Machines - machines meant to be used with a high definition television set in the living room that run Valve's Linux-based operating system Steam OS and support the Steam controller. This news comes from an Engadget report. Valve is set to hold its Consumers Electronics Show press conference this evening, where it will make a number of announcements related to these systems and its custom-built game-focused operating system.

Over the weekend Valve released the beta version of its Steam OS to the public at large. Steam OS is a Debian variant of the Linux operating system, in case you are interested. Valve has warned those that are eager to install the Steam OS on their PCs that the release is meant more for technically savvy users, and not casual fiddlers.

At about this time today (5:00 pm EST) 300 individuals in the United States will get an email from Valve Software announcing that they are one of the lucky few to get a Steam Machine. The beta quality Steam Machines and Steam Controllers will be shipped to those 300 testers beginning on Friday, according to Valve's announcement today. The system will support a selection of games that currently are capable of running on Steam OS, which will be added to users' libraries.

With Valve Software pushing towards a future in which it is at the center of our big screen gaming experience in the living room using a system that is entirely powered by the Linux operating system, it should come as no big surprise that the company has joined The Linux Foundation this week. The Linux Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of the titular open-sourced operating system.

Valve Software's Mike Sartain says that joining the foundation is just one of the ways that it is putting a spotlight on the operating system.

Valve has opened up registration for the Steam In-home Streaming closed beta, which will begin within the next two months (before the end of 2013). Those interested in getting in on the closed beta can do so simply by joining the official Steam group. The beta will let users play PC games on other machines within their house.

Id Software co-founder and Oculus Rift guy John Carmack says that he is not convinced that Valve Software can pull off the lofty goals of SteamOS and Steam Machines - while at the same time admitting that he has been very wrong in the past about what Valve is capable of.

"There's an interesting kind of retrospective on it," Carmack said during Nvidia’s Montreal conference.

He also pointed out the time when Valve approached Id Software about adding Doom 3 to Steam's launch lineup.

In a recent interview with Polygon, DICE creative director Lars Gustavsson said that the Linux operating system is one killer game away from having a major impact on gaming. He believes that the open-sourced OS one "killer app" away from that possibility.

Valve promised three big announcements and the first - revealed today - is that it is working on its own Linux-based operating system called SteamOS. Valve said that it came to the conclusion that the best environment for delivering games is one that it has created. While Valve promises that the new OS will be open-ended as Linux-based operating systems usually are, some are concerned that Valve is creating its own version of the "walled garden" that the company complained about with Windows 8.

According to a report from VGLeaks, Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 console will use a heavily modified version of the Linux operating system FreeBSD 9. According to the site, the PS4 will use a custom version of Free BSD 9 created by Sony called Orbis OS.

Free-to-play MMO developer and publisher Wargaming (World of Tanks, World of Warplanes, and World of Warships) has announced that it will provide financial support for three open-source foundations. The company says that it is doing this because it uses a number of open-source technologies in its games and it wants to help support those technologies grow and prosper.
