An indie film maker wants to put a spotlight on the company that created some of the greatest PC adventure game franchises in the game industry's history - and it is asking for the community's help. A new Kickstarter has been launched by Molotov Angel Productions seeking to raise $125,000 for a documentary about the history of Sierra On-Line.

Today at 10 am PDT (1 pm ET) Richard Garriott (aka Lord British and the creator of the Ultima series), and Uber Entertainment CTO Jon Mavor (creator of Planetary Annihilation) will take part in a Google+ Hangout to talk about virtual space domination, asteroid mining and the similarities between multiplayer gaming and crowd-controlled space telescopes.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) announced this morning that it has acquired six more video games and one gaming console for the Architecture and Design collection. These include works from the early industry pioneers Atari, Taito, and Ralph Baer, and from the comparatively young Mojang. The new additions are: Magnavox Odyssey (1972), Pong (1972), Space Invaders (1978), Asteroids (1979), Tempest (1981), Yar’s Revenge (1982), and Minecraft (2011).

Baldur's Gate 3 could still be made if the parties involved sort out the legal issues with the franchise, Beamdog studio head Trent Oster told Rock, Paper, Shotgun in an interview. Last week the company put production on Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition and patch updates for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition on hold and removed BGEE from various marketplaces.

Beamdog and Overhaul Games have pulled their Baldur's Gate remake, Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition from online stores. The game had been available for PC, Mac and iOS devices. Beamdog and Overhaul Games president Trent Oster issued a statement this morning on the web site for the game saying that the game was pulled due to ongoing legal issues related to the franchise. The latest patch and an Android version of the remake will not be released either.

We almost missed this one! Chris Roberts and Cloud Imperium Games’ Star Citizen has managed to raise an impressive $10 Million in crowd funding through a combination of its Kickstarter campaign and through its own crowd-funding efforts on its web site and via PayPal. Most of the money, $7.8 million, has been raised on the Star Citizen site. It took the company a mere eight months to raise the money too. Back in February the game hit the $8 million mark.

Former Junction Point founder Warren Spector will deliver a keynote address at the Captivate Conference and Expo in October. Spector's keynote will be "Leadership in the Arts," and focuses on leadership in a creative medium. Spector has been developing games for over 30 years. His list of credits include the Epic Mickey series (Junction Point), Deus Ex series (Ion Storm Austin, Eidos), several Ultima games (Origin) and System Shock (Looking Glass).

Shadow Warrior Classic, an updated version of 3D Realms' 1997 game Shadow Warrior, is now available for free on Steam. The free game has been released by developer Flying Wild Hog and publisher Devolver Digital, who are also working on a "reimagining" of the game. The remake will also be called Shadow Warrior, and is set for release later this year on Windows PC and next-generation consoles.

Game Informer has a nifty little video of a recent meeting with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, who they ran into while in Montreal to cover the new Thief game. After bumping in to Wozniak, GI managed to convince him to do an interview. But the interview isn't the most interesting part of the story. Apparently Wozniak holds the high score in Nintendo Power magazine for Tetris on the original Game Boy.

Telltale Games announced in 2011 that it was working on a reboot of the classic Sierra point-and-click adventure game series, King's Quest, but it looks like that's not going to happen after all. Instead Activision, who merged with Vivendi Games (who owned Sierra's IP) in 2008, has retained the license and will now work on a reboot of the series in-house.

Richard Garriott's Portalarium announced that it is now accepting PayPal payments for the Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues crowd funding campaign. The PayPal option is available on the Shroud of the Avatar site.

We totally flaked yesterday and forgot to mention this interesting Kickstarter promising a game from the folks behind the popular Sega series, Ecco the Dolphin. The game is called The Big Blue and it is being built by Ed Annunziata and former members of the Ecco the Dolphin development team including programmer Laszlo Szenttornyai and composer Spencer Nilsen.

Richard Garriott posted a lengthy explanation of a PC Gamer interview that was published yesterday in which he said that "most game designers really just suck," and that he had not met anyone who he thought came close to being as good a game designer as he was.

Ron Gilbert has left Double Fine Productions, according to a blog post on his site Grumpy Gamer. Having finished his work on his most recent project, The Cave, Gilbert has decided that he wants to strike out on his own. Gilbert is best known for creating the Monkey Island series of adventure games and the popular action-RPG series Deathspank.

CCP Games passed along a note to proudly proclaim that its flagship title, the space-themed MMO EVE Online, is part of the Applied Design exhibit at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. EVE Online is one of the first fourteen video games to enter its MOMA's permanent collection.

CCP Games announced that its long-running subscription-based sci-fi MMO EVE Online has surpassed the 500,000 subscriber mark worldwide for the first time in the game’s history. The milestone is a major one in the game's ten years of operation and follows the December 4 release of EVE Online: Retribution, the game’s 18th free expansion. CCP says that this latest expansion is its most successful ever. Also in December, EVE Online relaunched in China with new partner Tiancity to bring the game to a massive new audience where it has been thriving ever since.

If you want a real opinion on violent video game content, then William Volk is probably someone to ask. He has been in the video games industry since 1979 and he has seen his fair share of games that pushed the envelope and got the attention of people that normally don't pay attention to such cultural phenomenon - like politicians and parent's groups.

Chris Roberts' Star Citizen has surpassed the $8 million dollar funding mark from several sources including over $2.1 million on Kickstarter alone. That milestone is leaps and bounds above the original pitch for $500,000. The PC based space sim from the man behind Wing Commander, Privateer and Freelancer continues to break new ground for a crowd funded game, raising more than a half million dollars in February alone.

Former id Software, 3D Realms and Ion Storm superstar Tom Hall has launched a Kickstarter for a new game and game creation environment called Worlds of Wander. The idea behind the project is to create an easy-to-use game creation environment for Apple devices, Android, Linux, Mac and Windows that allows creative types to make and share their own platformer games. The whole idea is inspired the very first game id Software made - Commander Keen.

While Oklahoma lawmakers rightfully refused to introduce game regulation related legislation this year, the calls for such regulation from many uninformed people continue. We already wrote about one oped calling for an extra tax be levied on the entertainment industry. However, the larger issue of the public's opinion on violent gaming is something that will have to be addressed for many years to come.

We often like to point out when companies crush fan-made projects under a barrage of cease-and-desist letters and threats of punitive court actions, but Capcom has taken a different and positive tact for the fan-made mash-up game Street Fighter X Mega Man. The game pits the Blue Bomber against the stars of the popular Street Fighter series of fighting games, and as Mega Man beats the snot out of the likes of Blanka, Ryu, and Rose, he gains their special powers to use against other folks in the Street Fighter universe.

Epic Games President Mike Capps announced today that he will retire from the company after ten years of helping to create such hits as Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Bulletstorm, and Gears of War. He'll be handing off his presidential duties to someone else at Epic and will take on an advisory role. He'll remain on the Epic board of directors.

Capps did not disclose who would replace him as President of the company.

Double Fine's Ron Gilbert wants the Monkey Island franchise back from Disney. The creator of the popular point-and-click adventure game franchise lost the rights to Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion after he left LucasArts. Then the company decided to sell the franchise off to Disney. Gilbert thinks that Disney doesn't know what to do with the franchise and is just letting it languish. He describes the situation as very sad.

"Yeah, I wish I owned Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion, you know?," said Gilbert.

Electronic Arts is offering its popular online multiplayer game Battlefield 1942 for free to celebrate Battlefield series' 10th anniversary this fall. The only catch is that you'll have to install its Origin client in order to play it.

Wildcat Intellectual Property Holdings of Dallas, Texas has sued Wizards of the Coast in Federal Court claiming that the Hasbro subsidiary has violated its electronic trading-card patent by publishing "Magic: The Gathering Online." While Wildcat is suing Wizards of the Coast, it does not name Hasbro in its lawsuit.

Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts must be a happy camper this week as his Kickstarter campaign for Star Citizen cruises past its target goal of $500,000 with 26 days left before it even hits its deadline. Currently the new space simulation game from Roberts has raised $544,293 from 11,974 backers.

Earlier this week Wing Commander and Privateer creator Chris Roberts announced his newest game, Star Citizen, and revealed the launch of a crowd funding campaign for it. Roberts made his big announcements on the new space simulation game during GDC Online in Austin, Texas. Today, Roberts issued a press release announcing that Star Citizen has already raised over $455,590 from its crowd-funding drive. While some of the pledges are not showing up on the custom crowd funding page due to technical difficulties, Roberts says that the strong support he wanted for the game is materializing.

We've seen some interesting Kickstarters looking for funding, but a new Kickstarter that features Tom Hall (Commander Keen, Doom, Rise of the Triad, and Anachronox) and Brenda Brathwaite (Wizardry RPG series) promising an "old school" role-playing game is one that probably deserves your rapt attention. The legendary developers, who will work with John Romero's Loot Drop on this particular project, are seeking $1 million, with a stretch goal of $1.9 million.

In a recent interview with Joystiq, GameStop CEO Paul Raines clarified a recent story about plans to sell vintage games and systems at retail stores throughout the United States.

According to a report on Polygon, video game retailer GameStop is seriously considering including a destination inside its retail stores specifically for shoppers looking to purchase classic game cartridges and discs that are no longer being carried by most retailers.
