Valve offers developers a chance to get their hands on the Steam Controller early

Valve is letting a select handful of developers have early access to its upcoming Steam Controller. The company has launched a web form on its forums for developers who want access to the controller to fill out.

The early access will be limited and only a "select" few will be chosen, according to Valve.

Former Valve economist is now a former Greek finance minister too

Former Valve economist Yanis Varoufakis is now the former Greek Finance Minister as well. Varoufakis took the post a mere six months ago, but given the financial turmoil in the country at present and some in the government playing financial chicken with the loans owed to the International Monetary Fund, it's understandable why Varoufakis would simply walk away from the post.

Valve details 'Steam Machines' release dates

Valve announced this morning that the first batch of Steam Machines - computers designed to be more like consoles and be used in the living room - will starting hitting retail on Nov. 10. Pre-order customers of certain brands could have machines as soon as October 16, according to Valve. The Steam Controller and Steam Link will be released on Nov. 10.

Valve expands refund policy to cover nearly anything you buy

Valve Software has updated the refund policy for Steam making it a little bit easier to get refunds for some purchases. Under the new terms, you can basically request a refund for anything you buy on Steam for any reason. Users can request a refund "for any reason" if the request is made within a fourteen day of purchase, and the item has been played for less than two hours.

After three years Valve finally says that it is working on problems related to hit boxes in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. After a thread on Reddit showing how hit boxes are all messed up in the game got an unprecedented amount of attention, Valve acknowledged the problem and noted that a future update would make hitboxes bigger.

'Dota 2' The International 2015 Compendium generates $2 million for prize pool at launch

Valve is trying to put some extra cash in the prize pool for this year's Dota 2 tournament, The International. Like last year it is selling The Compendium, a digital interactive book first introduced in 2013 as a way to increase the total cash prize for tournament winners, cost $10, with 25 percent of the purchase price going into the prize pool.

Valve abandons paid 'Skyrim' mods on Steam

Valve has apparently backed off of having paid mods for Bethesda's RPG Skyrim on Steam - at least for the time being, according to this Gamasutra report. The company announced that it is taking paid mods for the game offline and giving refunds to anyone who may have purchased a Skyrim mod.

Digital refund policy now in effect for European Steam customers

Beginning today, Steam users in countries under the banner of the European Union can get a refund for digital purchases. For up to 14 days from the date of the original purchase of an item, Steam users are entitled to a refund under European law and Valve officially announced via its Steam Subscriber Agreement that it is following that law:

'Paranautical Activity' Returns to Steam

Indie developer Code Avarice has sold the rights to Paranautical Activity to PC and console game publisher Digerati, which in turn has brought the game back to Steam.

You may recall that the game was pulled from Steam late last year after one of Code Avirice's co-founders made a death threat to Valve founder Gabe Newell.

"Just sold PC rights for Paranautical Activity to @DigeratiDM," Tweeted Code Avarice.

Valve Has Paid Out $57 Million to Content Creators

Former Valve Employee Named Greece's Minister of Finance

The man who once served as Valve's economist-in-residence (he wrote a regular blog about the company's virtual economies for a time) has taken a job with the government of Greece. Yanis Varoufakis, who worked for Valve from 2012 - 2013, analyzed some fascinating data about Valve's virtual economies including how gifting played a part in TF2's overall economy, how a bartering and arbitration formed around trades, and how Valve fires people.

Greece's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras unveiled the new cabinet earlier in the week.

Valve Reveals Dates for 'The International' DOTA 2 Competition

The official DOTA 2 blog reveals that The International pro-gaming event will take place August 3 - August 8, a full six days. Valve also said that the Main Event taking place live in Seattle will feature 16 teams this year. Steam has made live streaming a reality with a new update today to its beta client. Valve unveiled the new Steam feature here and highlighted some of the things you and your friends can do with it.

Dubbed Steam Broadcasting, anyone who uses Steam can stream audio and video from any game available on the service over the Internet, and that content can be viewed either by the public at large or only by people on their friends list (depending on your settings).

Paranautical Activity developer Mike Maulbeck was upset that his game made the front page of the Steam store labeled as an "early access" title yesterday. It is not an early access game, and so as some like to do, he took to social media to vent in a series of tweets. But as his tweets came out in rapid succession, Maulbeck said something he later regretted - he threatened Valve founder Gabe Newell's life.

Steam Curators Must Disclose 'Paid Recommendations'

Valve Software has updated it terms and conditions related to Steam Curators, making it a requirement for anyone that is paid for a recommendation to disclose it to customers. Valve launched the Steam Curator system as part of a large-scale update in September.

"If you've accepted money or other compensation for making a product review or for posting a recommendation, you must disclose this fact in your recommendation," reads the updated terms page.

Steam Now Has More Than 100 Million Active Users

While announcing its new Steam Discovery update, Valve also revealed that the service now has more than 100 million active accounts, up by 25 million from the 75 million figure the company revealed in January.

Valve also announced that more than 3,700 games are available to consumers on Steam, and that more than 1,300 games have been added in 2014. That's a dramatic increase compared to the 304 titles that were added to Steam in the first nine months of 2013.
