Arnold Schwarzenegger's latest film, Sabotage, hits theaters today in the United States. The film, which is getting decent reviews, is about the head of a US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) whose members are viciously killed and mutilated after a cartel bust. Schwarzenegger plays the lead character. But in promoting the film, the aging action star and former Republican Governor of California defended the high levels of violence by taking a shot at video games.

A number of things have happened since State Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) was indicted on a wide range of charges by the U.S. Department of Justice. Sen. Leland Yee’s defense attorney, Paul DeMeester, announced that he was no longer running for California Attorney General, for starters. DeMeester declined to discuss whether Yee intends to comply with the resignation demand from state Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg.

As we reported earlier today, Leland Yee, author of the 2005 anti-video game law that was shot down by the Supreme Court in the landmark Brown v EMA decision, was arrested this morning on charges of bribery and corruption.

New research from Craig Anderson, a psychologist and professor at Iowa State University who is known for his anti-game research is making the rounds this week, but it is not going unchallenged. Anderson's latest research suggests that children who play violent video games "may experience" an increase in aggressive thoughts, which "could" lead to aggressive behavior.

The Battlefield 4 DLC, China Rising, is taking some heat in the editorial page of the Chinese military newspaper Zhongguo Guofangbao, according to the South China Morning Post (as reported by Polygon).

A new study by the Oxford Internet Institute at Oxford University finds that people who have a belief in whether there is a link between violent video games and aggressive behavior are often influenced by whether they have actual experience playing video games.

According to a Wall Street Journal report (membership required), the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) spent a considerable amount of money and effort in fighting anti-videogame laws in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, and New Jersey - and in Oklahoma last year. Gamasutra points out a video (to your left) featuring UK gamer and writer Charlie Brooker trying to explain to Channel 4's Jon Snow how to play games on the new PlayStation 4 console. The video is interesting because it shows how older people just don't understand video games, and how the media often repeats the same tired questions about violence in video games.

Earlier this week, the official investigation report for the shooting at Sandy Hook was released to the public and as any rationally-thinking human being could have surmised 11 months ago, video games had precisely squat to do with it.

But will that matter?

The Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA) has put out a special call for action specific to residents of Massachusetts, where a state senator has proposed that violent video games and video games in general should be studied by a panel (put together by the Senate) to determine if they cause real-world violence.

The bill is called S 168 and is the brainchild (we use the term loosely in this case) of State Senator William Brownsberger (D).

Berin Szoka, President of Internet rights organization TechFreedom has penned an interesting editorial over at the Huffington Post detailing his group's opposition to Massachusetts state lawmakers pushing for research on the connection between real-world violence and playing violent video games.

A Massachusetts state senator is pushing legislation that would study video games and their possible link to violent crime. Sen. William Brownsberger (D-Belmont) has proposed legislation (S 168) to create a special commission to investigate the influence of violent video games and to find if there is a connection with real world violence.

"As a legislator, I don’t know the answer to this question," Brownsberger said during a hearing on the bill Wednesday before the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies.

The plaintiff in the landmark gun rights Supreme Court decision that bears his name (Heller v. District of Columbia) warned that the effort to regulate violent video games in the U.S. Congress is "a backdoor attack on gun rights." The Supreme Court case, Heller v. District of Columbia, overturned D.C.'s handgun ban. In a report on conservative publication Human Events, Heller said that lawmakers are targeting video games as a way to get at the issue from behind.

In an editorial for MCV, Professor Mark Griffiths, the director of the International Gaming Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University, responds to a story that ran in UK paper The Mirror that put the blame on the Washington Navy Yard Shooting squarely on the Aaron Alexis' fascination with Call of Duty.

The voice actors behind the main protagonists in Grand Theft Auto V (Michael, Trevor, and Franklin) are speaking out about the role of violence in the game in a new interview with PCAdvisor.

In January 2013, the American Psychological Association created a Task Force to review its 2005 Resolution on Violence in Video Games and Interactive Media which found an increase in aggressive behavior, aggressive thoughts, angry feelings, and a decrease in helpful behavior as a result of playing violent video games.

A nine-year old boy from Orlando, Florida has been placed in "home confinement" for bring weapons to school. His father claims that the boy brought "an unloaded handgun, a magazine with six bullets inside, a steak knife and a small-handled sledge hammer" to school because he was emulating what the main character "Steve" does in Minecraft.

"They use hammers to dig and knives and guns to protect themselves from zombies," he said, according to the a report from Orlando news station WFTV.

A study from UK-based research firm YouGov (as unearthed by Gamasutra) finds that people who think that playing violent video games can lead to real-world violence like mass shootings tend to be older and have no familiarity with playing games.
